Expressions

I got this idea from a TV show I watched earlier this week, and where better to put it then on here. Ever think about where the expressions people say originate from? Well I have, so here I am to share my findings with you.
Top eight Expressions
Bite The Bullet Taking it as it is/ accepting something difficult.
Can you imagine living in 1846 where this saying came around? When soldiers had to get surgery during battle they did not have pain meds to numb the pain, so the surgeon had the men bite down on bullets to help with the pain and so they would not scream, ouch!

Waking Up On The Wrong Side Of The Bed Being in a bad mood/ getting up in one.
Back in the day the left side of anything was considered evil, couldn’t imagine if you were left-handed, you would be thought of as completely sinister. Anyways, to chase evil away, people would put the left side of the bed up against the wall so that people had no choice but to wake up in a good mood; on the right side of the bed.
Show Your True Colors To show how a person really is.
Ships would try to confuse the enemy by flying different colored flags than what their real colors were, but the rules of war stated that before firing they had to show their true colors.
Saved by the Bell Saved from a bad situation.
Back in the 1900’s being buried alive was a real thing, it actually happened a lot. They came up with a coffin that had a bell on it, so if by chance you were buried alive you could ring the bell and people at the graveyard would hear it and dig them out.
Rule of Thumb A common standard.
In the 17th century it was legal for a husband to beat his wife with a ruler since a ruler is usually no wider than a man’s thumb.

JayWalker Illegally crossing the street.

When Jay birds fly outside of where they know they act confuse. Amused with there irregular behaviors people began using the expression “Jaywalker” to explain crossing the street illegally.

Go the Whole 9 Yards Giving it your all/ trying your best.
During World War II the pilots received 9-yards of ammunition, so when they attacked their enemy they gave it all they had, the nine yards.
Go Cold Turkey To quit something suddenly.
When people withdrawal from drugs their skin becomes clammy and gets goose bumps. It reminds people of the skin of a plucked turkey.

So bloging is still very new to me and I really do not understand other than saying it is like a giant Facebook. So anyone with any insight, please feel free to share.

#1 Learning about blogs.

My opinion about blogs... I HATE THEM! or at least I hate this one, for now. My experience with blogs so far is horrible. Before this class the only time I have ever heard of the word blog was in "Dog with a Blog," so trying to get into this blog thing I went to check out that website. Visiting http://disney.go.com/disneychannel/dog-with-a-blog/, I found out that a blog is pretty much like Facebook, I mean I know there are different types of blogs, but what I understand is that a blog is telling people what you are doing, what’s going to happen, stats on a game, etc., so I should just put my whole Facebook on my blog right? Just kidding, but after reading three of the blog entries, this is what I learned: I still do not understand blogs.

One of the blogs I read was http://livethetoughlife.com/. It is about the Spartan Race. This blog was not so bad; as I mentioned before I am an athletic person, this is a good blog for athletes, Argo i like it. It tells people what is going on throughout the course of the race. It also states the runners' name, what their favorite part was, the different types of shoes that are used, the background of the runner, how he prepares for the race, and how he trains. This blog essentially tells you the top ten in the Spartan Race and how they came to be. For people who like to run to it gives them a variety of how people workout and keep in shape.

The next blog I absolutely love! http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1991933_1991952_1993775,00.html. I LOVE soccer and LOVE David Beckham, so this is my favorite. This blog talks about the World Cup and about soccer in general, how soccer has made a comeback in the last few years. I might keep checking up on this blog since it keeps soccer fans updated on what is new and what is going on with the World Cup. It gives insight on what is going to happen in games, who we think is going to win, who are key players to watch, and so on.

My last blog is a corporate blog, http://googleblog.blogspot.com/. This is not very interesting; I can see how it can be helpful, but it is not something that catches my eye. The blog talks about what Google is going to be coming out with and what they already have out. For example, it talks about Google maps and how you explore places with it, like the Grand Canyon. It also has information on the Google Science Fair and how they are looking for the “next big thing” to change the world. You can get updated with job openings, economic growth, government ideas, etc. My opinion is that corporate blogs may not be very exciting, but they are useful for staying up to date.
